MEET BARRY CAPLAN

Originally a software algorithm designer for NASA, I switched careers into international software product development in 1992. I was responsible for some of the earliest Japanese Windows and Apple software from the USA. From then on I've split my time balancing technical management and business development issues, balancing competing demands with limited resources.

I have worked solely with hi-tech product and service startups, primarily in Silicon Valley and Japan, for over 10 years. I have been routinely involved in establishing “industry best practices” for international product development and marketing for many early stage and mature companies. Now I have started Product Management Department here in Silicon Valley so you can benefit.

I am happiest when I am using my insight, analysis, and diagnosis skills to create and build and execute. I bring high energy, dedication, evangelism and superb modeling skills to the task of building your company.

Here are some of my outstanding success stories:

  • Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute

Employee #12. The early team designed and implemented the science and public relations processes the public is still so fond of today. Yes, every time you see a picture or read about a discovery, that is a direct result of this early work. We didn't have anything to do with the hardware problems you heard about though!

  • International Communications

Hired at Director-level to introduce sfotware internationalization services. Built sales and marketing model and exceeded target revenue by 5x the in the first year. ICI was eventually acquired by Lionbridge and now is part of the clear market leader.

  • Cobalt Networks

Pre-IPO. Built a development team to deliver international products, while working closely with senior international sales and marketing. I bridged customer and channel expectations with product development. International product sales reached 40% of all sales, and Cobalt became Sun's largest acquisition ever!

  • Kana Communications

Pre-IPO. Creating and delivered international versions of all products and services. Built and led teams of product managers, program managers, developers and QA engineers. Negotiated and managed outside vendor and outsourcing relationships. Managed headquarter visits by international partners. Managed product training and support for Japanese office. Sounds like a lot and it was, and it was worth it: international sales of product and services grew from 0 to $35M in 18 months. Kana is one of the few success stories from the dot-com era still going!

Favorite dot-com glory moments: eBay's management team deciding to use Kana's not-yet-existing Japanese software from the first day of the eBay Japan launch. My team delivering to eBay's exacting standards in record time; Delivering products that allowed Cobalt's International Sales team and distribution channels to regularly outsell their US counterparts. Training the trainers at Autodesk so every engineer knows how to properly internationalize their code. Every deal closed, every customer satisfied, every goal achieved.

I've been invited to speak on my passions at conferences of the American Translation Association, Software Publishers Association, the Society for Technical Communication, the Unicode Consortium and more.
